Your Freedom - Sign the Wikileaks Petition Now!

This is an email I received today. Take a moment to send a message to those who aspire to be your future masters!

    Friends,

I never normally do this sort of thing, but I feel that the pressures being brought to bear on Wikileaks are threatening freedom of speech everywhere and will set a precedent for years to come - if we do not act, the way will be cleared for censorship by proxy and directly, using govt regulation or pressure on commercial companies like Paypal, Amazon and EasyDNS to follow a government line

Things that may be strengthened and empowered include ISP based internet filters in Australia, Media Tribunals in South Africa amongst other anti democratic tools that governments everywhere would love to use - especially those that would like their "private business" to remain private - allowing corruption to continue and dissident views to be suppressed.

Burma, Zimbabwe, China and others will be encouraged to continue their practice of shutting down free speech because the West has been proven to do so, when we should be setting the moral high ground.

If we do not do something, we may be expected to see in future that the news will be limited to the banalities of Lady Gaga's "controversial" dress sense or what Paris Hilton did on Saturday night. And it will be our fault.

Avvaaz are initiating a petition to work against the Wikileaks crackdown.

I've just signed the petition and urge you to do the same to stop the Wikileaks crackdown. We need to know the truth and stop politicians lying to the world.

I think you'll be interested and might want to support the campaign, too. Check out the link below and join me in signing:
    http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/96.php

I also urge you to donate to Wikileaks if at all possible.

The Resource Curse of Western Australia

Wikipedia describes the resource curse as follows 'The resource curse (also known as the paradox of plenty) refers to the paradox that countries and regions with an abundance of natural resources, specifically point-source non-renewable resources like minerals and fuels, tend to have less economic growth and worse development outcomes than countries with fewer natural resources.'

Western Australia might appear to have escaped the resource curse on the surface, but if you dig a little deeper you'll find some disturbing facts -

    • The city of Perth has become frighteningly congested & sprawls to the north & south, a greater distance than any other city on the planet.
    • Our natural resources are seriously depleted with a water crisis, constant drought & farm land that is mostly denuded and kept on life support with petroleum fertilisers.
    • The crayfishing industry is seriously damaged & many fishermen have lost their businesses.
    • For the most part, the population is kept focused on building castles in an increasingly drought prone environment.
    • Regional food security is a distant memory. If the big distribution chains of Woolworths & Westfarmers were to be disrupted, hunger on a mass scale would be inevitable.
    • The Swan River, lifeblood of Perth city is in a seriously unhealthy state.

While the resources are abundant, Western Australia will be kept alive but once the resource reserves are depleted, Western Australia will be left to blow away in the hot dry winds of the future.

    Cultural Connectivity & the Singularity

The Singularity is an emergent term that has been coined at a time of immense technological change, when our everyday realities become increasingly impermanent and transient.

The concept of a Singularity has until recently been used to describe a point where spacetime becomes so warped by the force of gravity that information cannot escape and the event horizon becomes empty or black. The use of the word Singularity in relation to technological change is a metaphor for the true use of the word and does a good job in helping us to imagine technological change that is so radical that it becomes increasingly hard to predict the future. It is worth remembering that only a few generations ago, one could pass through life without experiencing any significant technological change.

One of the primary areas where we experience technological change in our immediate environments is in our relationship with media, communication and the associated connectivity to our fellow humans around the memes and ideas that spew forth endlessly. We enjoy a communion of ideas in the medium of the internet.

Now while it is easy to focus on the new technologies with all their wiz bang features, it is harder to spot the seething undercurrents in the global psyche that look a lot like an emergent property. Up until only a few decades ago most informing was done with the aid of the passive medium of television and newspapers that relied on powerful elites for their reach. Now, even while mass market media still dominates even on the internet, the cracks are emerging and centres of influence are losing their grip. In a network without a centre, the hot fires of competition & lack of respect for intellectual property are setting fire to established power structures.

The new emergent mind is dreaming a thousand dreams and those dreams are infused with our passions, fears, hopes and archetypes. For the watcher, the density of exploration of ideas, even on the fringe seems to spark with apparent synchronicity.

For those who might choose to focus primarily on the physical phenomena associated with the singularity, the rich, multi dimensional psychic changes experienced by the masses as we are hurled into the future might go unnoticed, at least for a while.

    Copenhagen - does it matter?

With old political systems ill prepared to cooperate in a rapidly changing world, is it possible that new forms of cooperation that bypass political structures will emerge and drive grass roots change in our behaviours toward energy consumption or will rapid advances in the delivery of energy from new sources such as solar mean that our worries about waste and excess will ultimately be meaningless?

    Future airport coming to Perth

The airport of the future will be designed to allow rapid transit through check-in and is a special Quantas offering designed to re-establish the airline as a premium provider of air travel.

Business & first class passengers will be issued with special personal and baggage electronic tags that will more than halve the amount of time that is spent in check-in.

The new technology will be introduced in Perth first, then Sydney and finally Melbourne.
